Asheldham [11 Images]

Hunter's base in partnership with The Asheldham Centre. A unique organisation links up with a unique outdoor centre.

Asheldham Courses [9 Images]

Hunter runs up to 20 courses a year at THE ASHELDHAM CENTRE. These photos are literally just a brief snapshot of our work.....

Blacks North East [9 Images]

The original plan was for a Blacks team of up to 20 to meet me just east of Glossop on the edge of the Dark Peak, and back-pack up to Bleaklow. Due to local Access Law enacted (quite rightly) by the farmers, and the fact that the 'Glorious 12th' grouse shooting season was only two days away we could not camp either on the approach-in (Doctor's Gate Path)or on the top. However we had a technical afternoon on various mixed terrain, a few challenging 'airy' footpaths, and an interesting minor knee injury just after we'd finished our first aid scenario on lower limb injuries. Hmmmmm. Weather was mixed but became warmer and brighter on descending. It was not quite the day we'd planned, and not being able to instruct on a wild camp overnight was a bit frustrating. But we learn to 'roll with the punches' in this job.....

Blacks North West [13 Images]

Twelve clients from various Blacks and Millets stores in the north-west were met on an originally unplanned rendevous along the Lonscale Crags path in the Lake District's Northern Fells, an airy track at times; they were briefed and backpacked into the 'Back o' Skidda' area, widely held to be the last great emptiness of Lakeland. The purpose of the course was to introduce some elements of navigation, campcraft, and survival...to provide a taster, regardless of the experience of the twelve folk here. We camped wild and very remote (even for the Lakes) below Snab at a pre-planned location on a bench of 'flatish' moorland between Snab's south slope and the Caldew. Weather was excellent for the first day deteriorating overnight to torrential rain around midnight to 3am, then heavy drizzle and mist until and beyond 10.00am the next day. We covered the main elements of map nav., analysis of tentage, and survival themes, though with a slightly earlier departure than planned due to weather/departure and transport issues. A good bunch of guys and girl. I'd been in the area for a couple of days to do an up to date recce and risk assessment.

Blacks Scotland [6 Images]

A few days in SW Scotland running a short training workshop for Blacks and Millets staff in Scotland. Due to excessive vegetation growth - and a shooting party - we were limited to valley access only - the old Portpatrick rail track route - into low but remote hills on the south side of Galloway Forest park. Remote though and pretty good introduction to some folks who'd yet to 'cut their teeth' in backpacking. A good bunch of guys - and lass! No pumas here (!) but no sheep or cattle either. An underused and sort of undiscovered area too; pretty inaccessible.

Blacks South [11 Images]

Two days at Asheldham with 16 guys and lasses undertaking a basic skills workshop in campcraft, survival, and navigation. The weather was perfect. No backpacking on this course, but all participants camped on the meadow opposite the Centre. A night nav was undertaken out beyond our Asheldham (www.hunterasheldham.yolasite.com) right to the edge of the peninsula at Sales Point and then along the beach where some practical survival skills were undertaken....and then the clients had to nav themselves back to the old chapel at St. Peters. The following day various on-site workshops were carried out, one of which was a speed-boil test of stoves brought.

HUNTER at Blacks [13 Images]

We were asked to undertake a promotion day for 'Blacks the Outdoor Experts' at their Fenchurch St. branch - setting up a similiar 'temperate woodland' scene to our normal 100 sq.m annual display. This was a particularly challenging set-up as we had no ceilings, only one wall, concrete, and pubilc access to contend with. But we did it because we're the professionals!

Lavenham & Priory [6 Images]

A remarkably well managed village in Suffolk, keeping history in view with direct links back to medieval architecture and an unspoilt street plan, Lavenham has to be seen to be believed. We have stayed at Lavenham Priory and consider it to be an outstanding place. See 'Links I' in Menu.

Night Navigation Challenge [8 Images]

Hunter was hired by a local Baptist Church Mens' Group to organise - and 'lead' a night exercise; it broke all records in that the clients were slow enough to return to the centre at almost 3am - no group of clients have ever got back this late!! Needless to say we set 'challenges' en route - although the mere walking appears to have been a big enough challenge in itself.

Night Navigation Courses [5 Images]

For all age groups, usually in mid-winter groups are unaccompanied -after rigorous preparation by Instructors who monitor all participants when out for five or six hours. These courses are our staff training, our testing ground, our 'bread-and-butter' in many respects, and almost our 'monthly meet'. We do more of these than almost any other single course.

Norway Winter Mountain Skills Course [8 Images]

Seven pupils from an Essex comprehensive school undertake a very demanding winter course led by Barry Howard and Ruth Stroud in the high mountains of Telemark. Access was only possible by sno-cat; accommodation was in the Hollane hut, and the syllabus included navigation, snowholing, movement skills, severe cold-weather survival, cross country skiing, and 'walking'.
