"The purpose of the Alladale Wilderness Reserve is to restore a remote area of the Highlands to its former natural glory. "

Since Hunter Outdoor Training first heard about the Alladale Wilderness Lodge & Reserve, having worked all over Sweden, in very similar environments to their base Sutherland, and having spoken to the Alladale staff, we have been most impressed with their commitment to their vision of re-wilding and educating those who are interested in the concept.

Make no mistake, this is a ground-breaking and exciting departure for wilderness, for conservation, and for education. The project, initiatives, and vision deserve serious attention. And we at Hunter applaud the Alladale drive into future wilderness development.

Based in the heart of the North West Highlands of Scotland, and covering 23,000 acres, the terrain of the Alladale estate is ancient forest, replanted forest, mountain, glaciated glens, lochs, tundra summits, and fast flowing streams into valley meanders - all prime habitat for early post-ice-age fauna to re-populate as it would have been naturally some 10,000 years ago.

"The superb Alladale highland lodge offers peaceful seclusion, panoramic views and laid-back luxury at the most remote and beautiful setting in the Scottish Highlands: Luxury accommodation for 16, fine dining courtesy of our resident chef,  a wilderness Spa and fully equipped Gym with unrivalled sporting opportunities."

"Alladale offers a unique opportunity to stay in the comfort of a private, luxurious highland lodge, in the most magnificent setting of one of Europe's most spectacular wilderness reserves.

You will have the opportunity to enjoy many activities and traditional highland pursuits by day, before returning to the lodge where our excellent staff await with roaring log fires, fine food, drinks, and many other additional comforts you may desire.

The sheer size and scale of the 23,000 acre Alladale Reserve is often enough to help guests to find a new perspective in life.  The landscape is truly awe inspiring, and the stresses and strains of modern life can seem somehow less consequential when staying with us on the Reserve.

Activities on offer include: angling, art retreats, mountain biking, calf tagging, corporate retreats, culinary holidays, deer stalking, clay-pigeon shooting, 4x4 safaris, golf, mountain walking, nordic walking, photography, pony trekking, special interest courses and holidays, and whisky tasting.

The wilderness re-wilding is planned to include a number of species that have been absent from Scotland for hundreds and hundreds of years. The current wildlife is typical of a mainland highland estate ; red deer, falcons, eagles, grouse, (now) capercaille since the early 1800s, trout, salmon, roe deer....but also elk, and wild boar, with a view to possibly adding the wolf at some stage.

With responsible management of the project the development appears exciting (dare we use that word.....absolutely!) and rewarding; and it is maybe forcing some established theories and agencies to have to be re-thought.
